Ancient History of hockey

Ancient History of hockey

The origins of hockey can be traced back to ancient civilizations, although the exact origins and early history of the sport are somewhat debated. Here are some key points about the ancient history of hockey:

1. Ancient Origins: Early forms of stick-and-ball games that resemble hockey can be found in various ancient civilizations. For example, a game called "Cuju" played in China around the 2nd and 3rd centuries BCE involved players using sticks to hit a ball into a net. Similarly, a game called "Harpaston" was played in Ancient Greece, which involved players using a curved stick to hit a ball.

2. Shinty and Hurley: In medieval Europe, games similar to hockey emerged. In Scotland, a game called "shinty" developed, where players used wooden sticks to hit a ball. In Ireland, a game called "hurley" was played, which involved striking a ball with a stick. These games laid the foundation for modern field hockey.

3. British Influence: The modern development of hockey is largely credited to the British. In the 19th century, British soldiers and settlers in Canada and India played variations of stick-and-ball games, which eventually evolved into what is now known as ice hockey and field hockey, respectively.

4. Ice Hockey: The early roots of ice hockey can be traced back to the 18th century in Canada. British soldiers stationed in Nova Scotia played a game called "hurley on ice," which involved using sticks and a ball on frozen lakes and ponds. The sport gradually evolved with the introduction of rules, and the first indoor ice hockey game took place in Montreal, Canada, in 1875.

5. Field Hockey: The development of modern field hockey can be attributed to the British influence in India during the colonial era. The British introduced the game to India in the mid-19th century, and it quickly gained popularity. Field hockey became an organized sport with standardized rules, and the first hockey club, the Calcutta Hockey Club, was formed in India in 1885.

6. International Expansion: The sport continued to spread internationally. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) was established in 1924 to govern the sport of field hockey globally. Field hockey was included in the Olympic Games for men in 1908 and for women in 1980, further boosting its popularity and global reach.

7. Modern Developments: Over the years, hockey has seen various developments in terms of rules, equipment, and gameplay. Innovations such as artificial turf for field hockey and improvements in ice hockey equipment have enhanced the speed and skill of the game.

While the ancient history of hockey is not extensively documented, these early forms of stick-and-ball games played a significant role in laying the groundwork for the development of modern hockey. Today, hockey is enjoyed by millions of players and fans worldwide and continues to evolve as a dynamic and highly competitive sport.

Equipments of hockey

Equipments of hockey

Hockey requires specific equipment to ensure the safety of players and to facilitate gameplay. The equipment may vary slightly between field hockey and ice hockey, so I'll provide an overview of the essential equipment for both versions:

Field Hockey Equipment:
1. Stick: A field hockey stick is a crucial piece of equipment, typically made of wood, fiberglass, carbon fiber, or a combination of materials. It has a curved head at one end and a handle at the other for players to grip and control the ball.

2. Ball: Field hockey is played with a hard, solid ball made of plastic or composite material. The ball is usually white and has a smooth surface.

3. Shin Guards: Shin guards are worn to protect the shins and lower legs from impacts, particularly from sticks and balls. They are typically made of foam padding or hard plastic and are secured with straps.

4. Mouthguard: A mouthguard is worn to protect the teeth and mouth from potential injuries. It is a flexible, custom-fitted device that is placed over the teeth.

5. Gloves: Some players choose to wear gloves to protect their hands and improve grip on the stick. These gloves are lightweight and provide some padding and protection.

6. Cleats: Field hockey is played on grass or artificial turf, so players wear cleats or specialized field hockey shoes with rubber studs for better traction on the surface.

Ice Hockey Equipment:
1. Skates: Ice hockey players wear ice skates that allow them to glide smoothly on the ice. Skates have a hard boot, a blade at the bottom, and are typically secured with laces.

2. Helmet: A helmet is worn to protect the head from potential impacts and injuries. It includes a cage or visor to shield the face and eyes.

3. Shoulder Pads: Shoulder pads provide protection for the upper body, including the shoulders, chest, and spine. They consist of hard plastic or foam padding and are worn under the jersey.

4. Elbow Pads: Elbow pads protect the elbows and forearms from impacts and falls. They are made of padding and plastic shells.

5. Gloves: Ice hockey gloves are heavily padded to protect the hands and fingers from injuries. They provide a secure grip on the stick and allow for flexibility.

6. Shin Guards: Similar to field hockey, ice hockey players wear shin guards to protect their shins and lower legs from sticks, pucks, and collisions. These guards are made of foam padding or hard plastic.

7. Jockstrap or Pelvic Protector: Male ice hockey players wear a jockstrap or pelvic protector to protect the groin area from potential injuries.

8. Mouthguard: Just like in field hockey, ice hockey players wear mouthguards to protect their teeth and mouth from impacts.

9. Puck: Ice hockey is played with a hard rubber disk called a puck, which is propelled by the players using their sticks.

These are the essential equipment pieces for both field hockey and ice hockey. Depending on the level of play, players may also use additional protective gear such as neck guards, padded shorts, and throat guards to enhance their safety on the field or ice.

Introduction of Hockey

Introduction of hockey
Hockey is a fast-paced team sport played on a rectangular field or ice rink, where two teams compete to score goals by hitting a puck or ball into the opposing team's net using a hockey stick. It is one of the oldest sports in the world, with a rich history dating back centuries. Hockey is widely popular and played in many countries, particularly in North America, Europe, and parts of Asia.

There are different variations of hockey, including field hockey and ice hockey, which are the two most prominent forms of the sport. Field hockey is played on a grass or artificial turf field, while ice hockey is played on an ice rink. Both versions share similarities in terms of rules and objectives, but they differ in terms of gameplay, equipment, and the surface on which they are played.

Hockey is known for its high level of intensity, skill, and physicality. It requires players to have excellent hand-eye coordination, agility, speed, and teamwork. The game is played with two teams, each consisting of six players, including a goaltender or goalkeeper. The objective is to outscore the opposing team by shooting the puck or ball into their net while defending one's own net from being scored upon.

Hockey matches are typically divided into periods, with breaks in between. The length of each period can vary depending on the level of play, but it is usually 20 minutes in professional ice hockey and 35 minutes in field hockey. During the game, players use their hockey sticks to pass, control, and shoot the puck or ball, while goaltenders use their bodies and specialized equipment to prevent goals.

Hockey has a dedicated fan base and is celebrated in various international competitions, including the Olympic Games, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship, and regional tournaments such as the National Hockey League (NHL) in North America and the Euro Hockey League (EHL) in Europe. These events showcase the skill and talent of players from around the world, attracting millions of viewers and creating a thrilling atmosphere for fans.

Overall, hockey is a captivating and exhilarating sport that combines skill, strategy, and physicality. Whether played on the field or the ice, it continues to capture the hearts of fans and players alike, making it a beloved and enduring sport across the globe.

" THE NEW BOY IN THE CITY " is the real experience of author. This article tolds you various experience experienced by author.

I belong from rural village area. After fourth standard I went at district level for school studies. when I was in 9th standard I was applied for NLSTSE examination. The exam centre came at Pune. That was the first time I came to Pune with my DAD (3rd February 2018). That two day's were amazing. After that with my friend I came to Pune for giving SPI college examination and centre was Fergusson College. That was surprised for me. Unfortunately I was unable to clear that examination. Now, I was totally in confused state.

I was cleared 10th standard. I stood first in military school. Now, I was in search of best college. I applied almost all over Maharashtra. Many colleges was going to be full but, Pune district College admission list was not came was till on waiting. I was quiet in tention. No one was there to help me instead of my MOM-DAD. Exactly two years before on 12th July 2019 at the time of evening my DAD ask me about admission list, that time we don't have any type of Android phone. So, I took a phone from neighbour and check the list of admission and I was surprised because, in first list only I was selected for Fergusson College. Which is fully of Historic things. My DAD was also not believe on that list so, he do cross checking by asking on net cafe and all were surprised. That evening was really one of the turning point of my life.

From 13th July 2019 my new journey starts in the new city. With DAD I came to Pune. We searched everywhere for room and hostel. We search whole day by walk and by auto but, we not get it. We enjoyed that day by seeing the amazing beauty of Pune. First time I saw many vehicles with many roads, there were bigger and bigger buildings. Luckily at the end of the day at JM road we got the room on rent. We both were happy. On next day with DAD I went to the street of clothes called Somwar peth. Due to the high cost of clothes I can't purchase clothes. We went to college but today I miss all the classes and that was the only day I missed the whole classes in 11th standard. At the end of the day DAD went to home, by inspiring me.

I was totally new in the new city and feeling alone. But, that city never keeps me alone after that day. I joined the college next day and I really like the college and teaching. From that day I was decided not to miss the lecture and till end I attended almost all classes. I makes friends even I was shy. I learned many things from every person. My college gives me many opportunities to explore myself. Really people from new city was totally amazing, cooperative and happy.

Those days are rainy, that time I don't have umbrella and now, no one came to give me umbrella, usually happens in the films. But, Pune is full of natural beauties and trees, that memorable trees only gives me shelter for sometime. That every rain drops has its own story and that inspire me to write their story. First time in life I was tried to write stories in the forms of poems and that was quite amazing. That city helps me to explore my talents in different ways. College friends inspired, helps me to express myself. When I was feeling alone then I was tried to write something new. I was very selfish person in case of saving money due to many reasons but, Pune tolds me to enjoy the street foods and be happy and keep smiles on face. I never visited any place or never went to any trip/picnic but that city is full of monuments, historic, tourism places and what not. That places gives me satisfaction and inspires me to write many poems, articles after visiting that places. The beauty of Pune in winter is not less than heaven. Each season have a different story.

The Dagdusheth Ganpati is the temple of Lord Ganesha. Is one of the famous tourist spots. Similarly Shanivar wada is the history place of 16th century. There are many places like Balgandharva, Sambhaji Maharaj Garden, Jangli Maharaj Mandir, pataleshwar cave, many temples, many tourist places. Pune is also famous for clothes, there are many streets and spots well-known for shopping. There are many rich people but, with soft hearted. Their was many situations, stories with Punekar's.

I also got allotted Government hostel. Everything, every situation, every problems from Pune teaches me new thing, new lesson. There is not a single thing that we hate Pune. Pune is historic capital of Maharashtra. Many people came here for job. Every person in Pune tried to live life prestigious. I also visited Mahatma Phule museum with my classmates. The Museum is full of historic things include stones also. Pune is well known for MPSC study. From every corner of Maharashtra student comes here to study. In Pune every student has his/her own story.

This city have world famous NDA campus at Khadakwasala. Here, Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Airforce trading given to officer at single place. Similarly this city have AFMC. This college is for Medical Army. And many more training centre's and railway centre's. Also have many camps. This city attracts every student for study. The city in nights looks amazing. The glamor at night is unique. Their atmosphere, their culture, tradition is really unique. After 7-8 months after I was " THE NEW BOY IN THE CITY " I never feel alone, new because that city loves me. It creates many memories, it gives me happiness.

But, unfortunately due to lock down I came to my home. Today exactly two years ago my journey was started towards the Pune. In memories of Pune I start to write " THE NEW BOY IN THE CITY ". I really missing Pune. But, through poems, articles Diaries, pictures I keep it with me in the forms of memories. Pune is not just a city.
